Love and Our Lexicon

lex·i·con
[ˈleksiˌkän, ˈleksiˌkən]
lexicon (noun)
  1. the vocabulary of a person, language, or branch of knowledge:
  2. “the size of the English lexicon”
  3. Ever since I was a little girl words have fascinated me.  I began reading at a very early age, and I believe this became intertwined with my love for writing and my love of words.  Words have so much POWER.  They can make us fall in love, make us hate, make us stronger, make us weaker, they are the voice we assign ourselves to express our innermost thoughts.   But really, it is the ones (words) that become part of our lexicon that made me wonder about the language of love and the words of lust that have impacted us in dramatic ways and even become a way for us to breathe life into our relationships in an almost mythical and magical way.

Each word having a distinctive meaning and impacting a way to gauge and quantify the status of us, our world, and our relationships.  Some are necessary, some have obvious implications, and still others need to be modified and possibly obliterated, so as not to force us to label or define what we are and aren’t suppose to say in an attempt to define love and lead us on a quest for the perfect person who fits the stereotypes that become synonymous with relationships and love.

Here are some that need to go and some that need redefining…

Soulmate

It’s not that I don’t appreciate the notion of a soul mate, or that I am even opposed to anyone thinking they have found their’s.  I just think that this one is so over used and so misguided that it has become almost benign in the notion of the implication.

To imply that you have found your one true love and that he or she is your infinite missing link, and the other half that makes you whole, is a heady concept, a lofty goal, and an ideal that is almost impossible to live up to.  Should it be removed from our lexicon?   Probably not, but let’s not wield this one lightly.  Reserve it for the relationship that has stood the test of time, the one that has substance, not your drunken booty call, akayour latest Tinder hookup!true-soulmate-1

Bae

I don’t know how or why this caught on but please….No!  I am all for pet names, cutesy to you and your honey, nauseating to the rest of us, but let’s stop using Bae, it really doesn’t have the same panache as honey, sweetie or baby girl, and it is not original, or cute.  Now if we want to really make an impact how about committing to one that stands the test of time..albeit a bit over the top, but always works for me....Sexy Mother Fucker, as my fireman has been affectionately referring to me for the last 25 years! Time to remove Bae,  from our lexicon, right quick!

Making Love

I have mixed feelings about this one.  This is way too polite for me!  YES…you can make the argument that when two people are in love, this is the intimacy that exists between them, but I much prefer a bolder version, and flat-out “Wanna Fuck”?  There is no mistaken what is expected, no pre-requisite foreplay, and matter of factly stated, no denying what you’re down for!  I have no objections if you and your significant other want to still use this one, I just think it is best reserved for the beginning of a relationship when you are trying to trick each other into believing you are less of sinner and more of a saint, as you’re trying to mask that inner freak!

Paramour

This is one of those millennial, feel good kissy face ones, but it is so misused, and incorrectly so.  Kids….unless you are some married person’s dirty little secret, you are using this one incorrectly to describe your partner.  Besides for the fact that it just  sounds douchy!  We get it, he’s your guy, your world, your love, just not your paramour, unless of course you are the other woman, than shame on you, find your own man and move on……ASAP!

Breadcrumbing

For Christ’s sake… this one is relatively new, and is used to describe a person that ditches someone for no apparent reason and without warning in a relationship.  Another hipster term that is gaining momentum with my teens.  I think I may actually like this one though!  It does remind me of Hansel and Gretel for some reason, but that’s just my crazy ass! hansel and gretel

When you get right down to it, words are quite possibly the most beautiful, most damning, most powerful things, we can say to one another.   When choosing what to say, what is important is that we speak words that are kind, loving, supportive, beautiful, and uplift one another.  In a world that is full of vengeance, hate, and ego, it is easy to forget how impactful words can be, and the implications of those we speak.   So choose your words carefully, with good intentions, dirty, sexy, funny, loving, and otherwise.

Sinfully,

Susan xoxo
